Vocaloid and its subsequent iterations basically create songs upon the user’s whims via specially recorded vocals from various artists or singers, the lyrics of the song, and the melody that the user wants to tune it with. Vocaloid is by far the only program of its kind and is termed as a “singer in a box” in that it attempts, with varied success, to replace an actual singer in the composition of a song, making the program a DIY application for creating music. Hatsune Miku is a humanoid persona of the Vocaloid series and is represented by a 16 year-old girl with turquoise pigtails, with anime aesthetics. First released in 2000, Vocaloid came into a huge commercial success and a worldwide cultural phenomenon upon the launch of Hatsune Miku, dubbed the “first sound of the future”, in Vocaloid 2. Vocaloid is a singing voice synthesizer created by Yamaha Corporation, based partly on the research from Kenmochi Hideki from the Pompeu Fabra University in Spain.
